Some parents are reluctant to add an unnecessary burden by exposing a child with autism to more than one language.<br \/>\nHowever, recent studies have shown that children with autism can, in some aspects, outperform typically developing children. Many students with autism excel in memorization skills and may be able to acquire a large vocabulary, which makes understanding and repeating formal and written language easier for them compared to their peers when learning a language. Autistic students appreciate rules and structures and may even enjoy learning the grammar of a second language.<br \/>\nStrategies for English Language Teachers When Teaching Children with Autism<br \/>\nUse visual aids and illustrations<br \/>\nWait until the student is ready and attentive before giving instructions<br \/>\nSet clear objectives for each activity<br \/>\nMaintain a well-organized learning environment<br \/>\nFocus on and build upon the student\u2019s strengths<br \/>\nIdentify whether the learner also has dyslexia<br \/>\nFind ways to integrate strong interests or passions into learning<br \/>\nEncourage the student to communicate (this may be their only opportunity to do so during the day)<br \/>\nUse visual support for instructions and schedules<br \/>\nProvide ample space and comfortable seating that allows the student to move<br \/>\nGive instructions in both languages<br \/>\nMonitor bullying in the classroom (nearly half of children with autism experience bullying)<br \/>\nProblems usually arise with students with autism when there is a lack of communication between parents and teachers, and when teachers are not supported or provided with the appropriate tools, resources, and training. Parents often become experts in their children\u2019s individual needs and can offer excellent support to teachers.
