The ALCPT is the first step for many applicants to military and police organisations. The question we hear most is: what do the questions look like, and how do I prepare? This article explains the test format based on the official handbook, shows practice questions written in the same style, and gives you a practical preparation plan.
What is the ALCPT?
ALCPT stands for American Language Course Placement Test. It is published by the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) and is used by military organisations in many countries to place candidates and personnel in English programmes.
Test format
According to the official ALCPT Handbook (2025):
- 100 multiple-choice questions.
- Part I – Listening: 50 items based on recorded questions, statements, dialogues, announcements and news; about 20 minutes, set by the recording.
- Part II – Reading: 50 items based on sentences, questions and short paragraphs; 35 minutes.
- Total time: about 70 minutes including instructions.
- Skills tested: listening and reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary.
Required scores differ between organisations, so ask yours for the minimum score before you start preparing.
