If you plan to study at a university in the UAE or abroad, you will very likely be asked for a TOEFL iBT score. Booking the TOEFL in the UAE is done fully online in a few minutes, but small mistakes can cost you your test date or your fee. This guide walks you through the booking steps, what changed in the TOEFL from January 2026, and how to choose the right test date for your level.
What is the TOEFL iBT and who needs it?
The TOEFL is run by ETS and measures academic English. It is usually required by:
- High-school students applying to universities that require or accept the TOEFL.
- Master’s and scholarship applicants.
- Some employers and professional bodies that ask for official proof of English.
Before booking, check what your university or employer accepts and the score it requires. Not sure which exam fits you? Read our comparison of TOEFL vs IELTS vs Cambridge.
How to book the TOEFL test in the UAE
- Create an ETS account on the official site ets.org/toefl. Enter your name exactly as it appears in your passport; a mismatch can stop you from sitting the test.
- Choose the test format: at an authorised test centre, or at home with the TOEFL iBT Home Edition if you meet the technical requirements and your institution accepts it.
- Pick a city and date: search for available centres in Abu Dhabi, Dubai or elsewhere. Dates close to university deadlines fill up fast, so book several weeks ahead.
- Pay the fee: the fee is shown in US dollars at registration and paid by credit or debit card. Fees can change, so always rely on the price shown in your account.
- Choose your score recipients: you can send scores to a number of institutions free of charge before test day; sending them later costs extra.
- Check your confirmation email and read the test-day instructions carefully.
What changed in the TOEFL from January 2026?
- A new 1–6 score scale aligned with the CEFR, reported alongside the familiar 0–120 scale for a transition period of about two years.
- Adaptive Reading and Listening sections: question difficulty adjusts progressively based on your performance.
- Content that reflects real university situations such as class discussions and project work.
If your university asks for a score on the 120 scale, ask how it handles the new scale before you book.
When should you book?
Don’t book before you know your current level. Start with our free placement test, then:
- If you are close to your target score, book after 4–6 weeks of focused practice with test-style questions.
- If the gap is large, strengthen your general English first, then move on to TOEFL-specific preparation.
Common booking mistakes
- A name in your account that doesn’t match your passport.
- Booking at the last minute, leaving no time to retake the test.
- Choosing the Home Edition without checking that your university accepts it.
- Going into the test without practising the question types and timing.
