Most of us have watched the cartoon movie Tarzan. It’s truly a wonderful film, but our perspective on it had another angle: how could a human live among wild animals in the jungle without an identity, personality, or even a language to communicate with them? He lived almost naked, just eating, sleeping, and hunting!
This made us wonder: what prevented him from learning? The answer was: the absence of motivation, the right environment for learning, and the teacher himself.
Then came Jane, whom viewers saw as his other half, and the story took a slightly romantic turn. Romance aside, we saw in Jane the answer to our previous question. She provided everything Tarzan needed: motivation, a teacher, and the right environment for learning.
Let’s start the story from the beginning when Tarzan met Jane. He acted very strangely with her because he couldn’t understand what she was saying! She spoke English, while he only knew the language of the jungle animals. Likewise, she couldn’t understand the gestures he tried to communicate—they made no sense.
So she decided to teach him arts and sciences, helping him discover the world beyond the jungle. But it was impossible for him to learn about the world, arts, and sciences without being able to communicate. The first step that made this possible was teaching him English.
Since Tarzan was fascinated by Jane, he was willing to learn everything she taught him. This shows that the teacher must be loving and kind for the student to feel passionate about learning.
