Since January 2026, the TOEFL score report is no longer what you know. ETS added a new 1–6 score scale and changed how Reading and Listening work. If you plan to take the TOEFL this year or your university asks for a specific score, here is what you need to know.
1. A new 1–6 scale
From 21 January 2026, score reports show a 1–6 scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), the same framework that describes levels from beginner to very advanced. The aim is to make your level easy to understand for universities and employers.
2. The 0–120 scale continues during a transition
The 0–120 scale is not disappearing overnight. Both scales appear on score reports for about two years while universities update their requirements, so one university may ask for “80 out of 120” and another for a score on the 1–6 scale.
3. Adaptive Reading and Listening
In a multistage adaptive test, question difficulty adjusts progressively based on your performance. In practice:
- If questions get harder, that’s usually a good sign.
- Early questions matter because they shape the next stages.
- Practising only with old test forms is no longer enough; you need practice at varied difficulty levels.
4. Content closer to university life
Test materials now reflect real university situations such as class discussions and group projects, with work to reduce cultural bias in topics.
5. Faster results and simpler registration
ETS announced faster score reporting during 2026 and simpler registration. For booking steps, read our guide How to book the TOEFL in the UAE.
What should you do now?
- Ask your university whether it requires a score on the 120 scale or the 1–6 scale.
- Check your level with our free placement test.
- Practise with up-to-date materials that reflect the new format.
