Differences Between IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training

IELTS Academic:

Listening: 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer answers to the answer sheet; consists of four recorded conversations.
Reading: 60 minutes; includes three long passages with questions. Passages are selected from general books and magazines, suitable for non-specialists as well as students applying for university or postgraduate studies.
Writing: 60 minutes; two tasks:
Describe a diagram, chart, or graph in at least 150 words.
Write an essay on a given topic of at least 250 words.
Speaking: 11–14 minutes; a face-to-face interview with an examiner, including questions on general topics.
IELTS General Training:
Purpose: Measures English proficiency for everyday life situations.
Listening: Same as Academic.
Reading: Three sections:
Two or three short texts on general, everyday topics.
Two short texts related to workplace scenarios.
One long text on a general interest topic.
Writing: Two tasks:
Write a letter of at least 150 words.
Write an essay of at least 250 words on a given topic.
Speaking: Same as Academic.
Step Two: Preparation Activities
Review sample IELTS tests with answers available online.
