IELTS Academic vs General Training: Which One Do You Need?

The first question to answer when you start preparing for IELTS is: do I need IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training? Booking the wrong version means paying twice and losing preparation time. This article explains the difference simply and when you need each one.

What both versions share

  • Listening: the same test in both versions.
  • Speaking: the same three-part interview with an examiner.
  • Scoring: band scores from 0 to 9.
  • Length: about 2 hours 45 minutes.

Where they differ

SectionIELTS AcademicIELTS General Training
ReadingLonger texts from books, journals and articles in an academic styleEveryday and workplace texts: notices, instructions, staff handbooks, then a longer text
Writing Task 1Describe a graph, table, chart or processWrite a letter (formal, semi-formal or personal)
Writing Task 2Opinion or discussion essay in an academic styleOpinion or discussion essay on more general topics

When you need IELTS Academic

  • University admission for bachelor’s or postgraduate study.
  • Professional registration in some fields such as medicine, nursing and engineering in a number of countries.

When you need IELTS General Training

  • Migration to countries that ask for General Training.
  • Work or vocational training with some employers.
  • Secondary school or non-degree programmes in some countries.

Golden rule: ask the organisation you are applying to which version and minimum score it requires.

Which one is easier?

Many people think General Training is easier, but each version tests different skills. General Training reading uses more familiar texts, but it is scored differently and you may need more correct answers for the same band. Choose the version you are asked for, not the one that looks easier.

How to prepare for the right version

  1. Confirm the version and minimum score.
  2. Check your level with our free placement test.
  3. Practise questions from your version only, especially Reading and Writing.
  4. Write essays and get them corrected by a teacher – Writing needs outside feedback more than any other section.
